Budget Friendly Meal Planning

Budget Friendly Meal Planning: Healthy and Affordable Recipes

Let’s be real – feeding yourself and your family on a budget can feel like a juggling act. Between rising grocery prices and the temptation of takeaway on busy nights, it’s easy to feel stuck. But the good news? Eating well doesn’t have to cost a fortune!

With a little planning, you can serve up delicious, healthy, and budget friendly meals without breaking the bank. Let’s dive into some budget-friendly meal planning tips, easy recipes, and ways to make the most of your ingredients!

Meal Planning Tips to Save Money and Time

Plan Your Meals Around Sales

Supermarkets rotate their discounts weekly, so keeping an eye on specials can help you maximise savings. If chicken breast is on sale, consider planning multiple meals around it, like stir-fries, pasta dishes, or wraps. Buying discounted meat and freezing it for later use is another great way to cut costs. Check out supermarket websites, such as Coles or Woolworths, to see the latest deals before heading to the store. Apps like Half Price or Too Good to Go can also help you track weekly discounts.

Use What You Have

Before making a shopping list, take inventory of your pantry, fridge, and freezer. You might already have key ingredients that can form the base of meals. Expiring vegetables can be thrown into stir-fries, soups, or omelettes; while leftover rice can be used for fried rice or burrito bowls. Organising your kitchen and using older items first prevents waste and saves money. Try writing a list of meals you can make with what’s already at home before heading to the store.

Cook in Bulk

Preparing meals in larger batches not only saves time but also reduces your overall grocery spend. A big pot of soup, curry, or pasta sauce can be portioned out and frozen for future meals, making it easier to stick to home cooked dinners instead of grabbing takeout. Bulk cooking also allows you to take advantage of discounts on larger packs of ingredients. For example, buying a whole chicken and roasting it can provide meat for several meals, from sandwiches to stir-fries. Investing in reusable freezer containers or ziplock bags will keep meals fresh and ready to go when you need them.

Stick to Simple, Versatile Ingredients

Keeping a stock of staple ingredients that can be used in multiple meals helps reduce the need for frequent shopping trips. Affordable and nutritious options like rice, pasta, oats, lentils, beans, and frozen veggies can form the backbone of many dishes. For example, lentils can be used in soups, curries, or veggie burgers, while oats can be a breakfast staple or a base for homemade snacks. Choosing ingredients with a long shelf life also prevents waste and allows you to stretch your budget further.

Reduce Waste

Being mindful of food waste can significantly cut grocery costs. Get creative with leftovers. Roast vegetables can be blended into soups, rice can be turned into fried rice, and last night’s chicken can go into a wrap or salad. Stale bread can be used for homemade croutons or breadcrumbs, while fruit that’s past its peak can be frozen for smoothies. Planning meals that use up perishable ingredients first ensures nothing goes to waste. You can also keep a “leftovers night” once a week to clear out the fridge and prevent unnecessary food waste.

Did you know that food waste costs the economy around $36.6 billion or $2,000 to $2,500 per household per year. Read more here.
